The first room at the bottom of the stairs was the saloon, where a cowboy could whet his thirst, work up an apetite, and perhaps, loose some of his payroll at the card tables. The barkeep, honest as the day is long, had a trick he used to get a bit more of the cowboy's gold dust out of his bag. He'd simply spill a few grains on the bar as he counted it out, then carefully wipe the spilled gold dust off onto the floor. At the end of his shift, he'd go out in the street to get a bit of mud on his boots, then walk behind his bar to pick the gold dust up on his boots along with the mud. Then, carefully removing his boots, he'd walk home barefoot, where he could safely 'mine' the gold dust from the bottom of his boots. Sure, he had other ways of conniving the cowboy out of his 'loot' but that was probably the most ingenius of all!
