A very early photo of Mazatlan's Catedral Basilica de la Purisima Concepcion, with its beautiful double spires. The towering double spires of the Catedral Basilica de la Purisima Concepcion (Cathedral of the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception) guide you to the very center of old Mazatlan. Begun by the Bishop Pedro Loza y Pardave in 1856, the cathedral was built on the filled lagoon site of an original Indian temple. Mazatlan's turbulent history delayed the completion of the cathedral until 1899. In 1937, the cathedral was elevated to the status of a Basilica.
